The airstrike from Iran on Israel also affected a long-haul Austrian Airlines flight from Bangkok to Vienna. Because the airspace of Jordan, Iran, Iraq and Israel, among others, was closed, the plane had to make a detour – and ultimately make a stopover in Athens.
The Boeing 777-200ER would actually fly directly from Bangkok to Vienna. Flight OS026 was scheduled to land at 5:35 a.m., but its arrival was expected to be delayed, according to a report from Austrian Wings.
Due to the airspace closures, the plane had to make a detour. However, due to the increased fuel consumption, a safe direct flight to Vienna was no longer possible. The pilots therefore decided to make a stopover in Athens. The aircraft was refueled there and could then fly to Vienna.
At 9:19 a.m. the travelers reached their destination safely, several hours late.
