A group of young hikers underestimated the amount of snow in the Karawanken on Sunday. They had to make an emergency call and be rescued. The “Krone” spoke to a mountain rescuer about the operation.
A group of seven young hikers, all between 17 and 18 years old, wanted to conquer the Hochstuhl in Bärental on Sunday. But on the Hochstuhl via ferrata at an altitude of 1,900 meters they realized that was not such a good idea after all. “They simply left too late and underestimated the amount of snow,” says Hubert Schuster of the Ferlach mountain rescue service. That’s why the young hikers made an emergency call.
The police helicopter turned for walkers
“We immediately called the police helicopter because we realized that if we were to climb up now, we would also be in the dark and that would also have been dangerous for us,” said Schuster in an interview with the “Krone”. The helicopter was initially unavailable because it was en route to a fire operation in Styria. However, the crew decided to support the mountain rescuers from Ferlach. “And in the end, the seven hikers were brought into the valley unharmed.”
The Ferlach mountain rescue team was on duty with a total of 13 mountain rescuers and 2 female mountain rescuers.
