In most areas of life of Mr and Mrs Austrians it means “please pay more” – and the trend is increasing. “The prize hammer is still knocking us over the edge!” Phrases like this are now part of everyday life.
The cost of living is rising and rising, many people in Austria can no longer survive on the money. The “Krone” asked around all of Austria over the Whitsun weekend and asked: “Can you still afford to live?”
The tenor of the interviewed compatriots: Everything is becoming more expensive, and we especially feel that when shopping, at the gas stations or when paying the classic electricity and gas bill.
Living is also becoming more expensive
And the numbers speak for themselves (see chart below): the gas price rose by 424.3 percent and the electricity price according to statistics by 202.7 percent – in just one year! Living in Austria is also becoming more expensive. Rental costs have skyrocketed by an average of 70.9 percent since 2010.
And when it comes to food prices, prices haven’t just gotten more expensive. For example, butter costs 25.7 percent more, but the pick-up coffee (plus 10.8 percent) and healthy fruit (increase of 6.9 percent) are also noticeable at the checkout.
Small consolation: the wage development of the real net wage has also increased – by 16.3 percent in twelve years.
