The mountain trek of a 53-year-old Viennese man in the Hochschwab region of Styria came to a tragic end: after the man did not return from his hike on Sunday, searchers found the man’s body on Monday morning.
The weather couldn’t have been better for a mountain trip on Sunday. Nevertheless, a walk in Upper Styria ended fatally for a Viennese.
According to police, the 53-year-old sent photos on Sunday morning from the top of the “Messnerin”, a mountain near Tragöß in the Hochschwab region. Because the man did not return that evening, family members called the police.
Sad certainty on Monday morning
Mountain rescue teams, fire brigades and police immediately launched a major search operation. The Viennese’s mobile phone was also located and a police helicopter with night vision was deployed.
Initially the search was unsuccessful, but on Monday morning a search found the man’s lifeless body. According to initial investigations by the Alpine Police, the man may have climbed several times and eventually suffered cardiac arrest while searching for the right path.
