The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed serious concerns that Israel could attack its nuclear facilities in a retaliatory strike against Iran.
“We are always concerned about this possibility,” Rafael Grossi said Monday in response to a question from a reporter in New York. Grossi called for ‘utmost restraint’. Iran closed its nuclear facilities on Sunday for “security reasons,” Grossi added.
Although the facilities reopened on Monday, he kept the IAEA inspectors at bay until it became clear that the situation was completely calm. “Tomorrow we start again,” Grossi emphasized with a view to Tuesday. “This had no impact on our inspection activities.”
Response to Iranian attack planned
The IAEA regularly inspects Iran’s key nuclear facilities, including the Natans uranium enrichment facility, which are at the core of Iran’s nuclear program. Iran says it uses its nuclear program only for peaceful purposes. Western states accuse the country of pursuing nuclear weapons.
Israeli army chief Herzi Halevi said on Monday that his country would respond to the Iranian attack this weekend, but gave no details. Iran says it has retaliated for the April 1 shelling of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, blamed on Israel, that killed several people, including two brigadiers.
