151 seats up for grabs – Croats will elect their new parliament on Wednesday

Date:

The parliamentary elections started in Croatia on Wednesday morning. About 3.7 million people are called to cast their vote. A victory is expected for the ruling conservative HDZ party led by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković, who has been in power since 2016 (see video above).

According to surveys, the left-liberal opposition alliance ‘Rivers of Justice’ comes in second place. The right-wing populist Homeland Movement is expected to become the third strongest force, ahead of the left-green party Možemo (We can do it) and the conservative Most. Moreover, three small parties are likely to reach parliament above the five percent threshold.

This time the election campaign was short and unusual. Plenković described the president as a “political scourge” and “constitutional violator,” who in turn spoke of the “most corrupt government in Croatian history.” A total of 151 mandates will be awarded, eight of which will go to minorities and three are reserved for the diaspora.

Results expected late evening
About 3.7 million Croats are called to vote, including about 222,000 abroad. In this country probably about 10,000 people have the right to vote. In Croatia, polling stations are open on Wednesdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., while voting abroad has been possible since Tuesday.

The first official results will be published on Wednesday after 9 p.m.
