Two sensitive bears – in Pakistan they were forced to dance and stripped of their dignity – were freed from the ‘Four Paws’.
“Their suffering is unimaginable. Because they are kept on a chain and have to endure having a ring pulled through their very sensitive nose. And before they dance, their claws and teeth are pulled out,” says Viennese “Four Paws” activist Elisabeth Penz with tears in her eyes.
What shocks them even more: the practice of pitting these noble wild animals against each other like fighting bears is – like dancing – still legal throughout Pakistan. At least two of the creatures have now been removed from their heartless owners by a dedicated team from the animal protection organization.
“Both of our protégés were in extremely poor physical condition. Because they were recently abused for an infinitely cruel show fight. We were able to rescue them from miserable private homes and flew them to Punjab especially for this,” says “Four Paws” veterinarian Dr. Amir Khalil, who was able to place ‘Laila’ and ‘Boogie’ in an Asian state protection center after appropriate treatment.
The bear rescuers are very grateful to the country’s Supreme Court, as well as the advisor to the Pakistani Prime Minister and the state authorities: “They made this life-saving assistance possible.”
