The number of eviction executions has risen again in 2023. However, after a corona-related dip, this is still below the value of 2018 and 2019, Minister of Justice Alma Zadic (Greens) answered a parliamentary question from the SPÖ.
They were asked about the number of eviction notices, judicial dismissals and executions actually executed. While terminations dropped due to the pandemic and continued to drop afterward, the picture is different when it comes to eviction proceedings and foreclosures. There, the almost identical values for 2018 and 2019 fell sharply during the Corona years. From 2022 onwards there was an increase again, which continued in 2023 – but the values in both categories are still significantly below those of 2018 and 2019.
For example, just over 12,000 executions were carried out in 2018 and 2019. This value fell to 8,300 in 2020 and to 6,900 in 2021. In 2022, the number rose again to 8,600 and grew further to 10,100 in 2023. It is currently unclear whether this trend will continue, but in 2023 the number of evictions across all four the quarters constant. After a decline in the second and third quarters of 2023, the number of eviction notices increased again in the fourth quarter.
Type of vacated property not registered
The types of buildings that are evacuated are not broken down in the statistics. This concerns apartments as well as commercial properties and offices. The reason for cancellation and the type of home are not recorded, according to the answer to the question. To do this, you would have to evaluate all files manually.
A living umbrella should help
During the Corona pandemic, rent deferrals were granted and evictions postponed due to unpaid apartment rents. These measures have now expired. Afterwards, the so-called housing umbrella was launched – this is aimed at people with rent arrears.
