Last minute rescue! When a large fire brigade arrived that night at a house on Hoofdstraat in Stoob (Burgenland), the residents were still sleeping. The roof was already on fire. No one was injured. The investigation has now been completed. The damage: 200,000 euros.
Last Saturday around 1:45 am, the roof of a house in Stoob caught fire. The owners live on the ground floor, their grandson and his girlfriend on the top floor. An alert woman noticed the fire. Only the fire brigade was alerted and woke the sleeping residents. Everyone was unharmed.
National highway closed
The difficult firefighting work lasted until five in the morning. 60 comrades from Stoob, Neutal, Oberpullendorf and Pinkafeld were on site with ten vehicles led by Alexander Schreiner. The B50 was closed during the entire operation.
Startled by an alarm
“The fire brigade siren woke us up. There was no smoke in the room,” reports the grandson of the homeowner, who was in the attic apartment with his girlfriend. The fire he had lit in the fireplace the night before was no longer burning around 1 a.m. Only embers were visible, he said.
Hot gases were leaking
Fire investigators have ruled out an electrical fault. The insulated cables remained virtually intact. However, it was discovered that the glass fireplace door was not 100 percent closed. It is suspected that hot gases from the chimney caused the fire. “That is very likely. There are no indications of negligent conduct,” the conclusion reads. The damage is estimated at 200,000 euros.
