The climate activists of the last generation are announcing a new wave of protests. Protests against climate change will resume at regular intervals from May 4. What exactly does this mean for drivers, whose daily lives are often abruptly interrupted?
There was already fear: from May 4, a new and eighth wave of climate sticker protests would roll over the federal capital. They recently caused a brief stir during the Vienna Marathon. That wasn’t the first time this year.
Between February 26 and March 3, 2024, 100 arrests were made in various illegal actions in Vienna. Since 2023, there have been 3,700 reports, of which approximately 150 have been filed with criminal law.
“Heavy punishments”
You and all other participants are now facing “severe penalties”, as the Ministry of the Interior (BMI) writes. Only recently was a fine of 1,200 euros imposed by the Vienna State Police Directorate confirmed by the Administrative Court. Eleven climate activists blocked the road at the Reichsbrücke in May 2023 and were fined 1,200 euros per person.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) then seemed “very grateful” for the harshness of the Viennese court towards the climate stickers. He wants to continue taking action against them “with all vehemence”.
No obstacle for the climate glue group: it starts on May 4 with a major protest in front of parliament. Then there is “peaceful resistance”, as they say themselves. The risk of an administrative fine is accepted. “Protests will take place in and around Vienna in the coming days,” a Last Generation spokeswoman told “Krone”.
Hundreds of protest participants were expected
The group expects that hundreds of people will participate in the major protest and about 100 people will participate in the protest days. The forms of protest were kept secret. Exactly this: some will be familiar, some will be new and: “Glue will certainly be used too.”
In any case, the police are prepared. As has already been proven in many operations, she now acts “very routinely, consistently and carefully in her intervention”, the police told the ‘Krone’. The situation is continuously monitored and assessed. There will also be “concrete operational planning and preparations for possible actions in May”.
From May 4, drivers will again be required to: stay calm and keep a cool head. In the past, there have been repeated incidents of angry drivers on their way to work who wanted to take matters into their own hands.
No vigilance!
However, if you drag the activists off the streets in the heat of the moment, you expose yourself to prosecution. So it is best to wait for the police and hope that all “rescue control centers are always informed in advance by us before any protest”.
The procedure is stopped after death
But last May that probably didn’t work. Climate glues had paralyzed traffic on the Vienna distribution circuit and blocked a rescue operation. The activists admitted that the rescue services were not aware of the protest location as usual. Then the group was displayed. However, a month later the Vienna public prosecutor’s office ended the procedure.
Yet the call for more serious consequences is becoming louder and certainly not quieter due to the new wave of protests…
