In protest against their university’s position in the conflict in the Middle East, students from the renowned French university Sciences Po blocked a building in Paris. The students held up a banner calling on the university to cut ties with Israeli universities.
The university board received a delegation of protesting students on Friday in an attempt to find a solution to the conflict. The university said it strongly condemned the students’ actions. Due to the protest, several surrounding buildings also remained closed on Friday. The courses took place online.
Main entrances blocked
About sixty demonstrators were present in the building in the heart of the French capital. The main entrances are blocked. Video footage showed an entrance being barricaded with trash cans and bars.
The protests are increasing
There have also recently been pro-Palestinian protests at universities in the US. Several elite universities have been taking action for days against protests surrounding the Gaza war. Students were arrested for refusing to end the unauthorized protest.
Some demonstrators are accused of anti-Semitism and downplaying the Islamist Hamas. Hamas sparked the Gaza war on October 7 last year with its massacres and hostage takings in Israel.
