Road users in the Lower Austrian districts of Korneuburg and Baden were advised to be particularly careful on Friday morning: Due to the cold, many farmers lit so-called frost fires in the local vineyards at night. The result: thick clouds of smoke filled the streets and even caused traffic accidents.
The ÖAMTC warned of the visibility restrictions in the early morning hours. According to police, collisions took place on the S3 near Sierndorf and on a national highway near Seyring in the municipality of Gerasdorf near Vienna, as well as on the A2 in the Bad Vöslau region.
Clouds of smoke would drift over the roads. Several people were slightly injured.
“A dangerous phenomenon”
The smoke was caused by so-called frost fires. At night the temperatures were below zero. “It will therefore be a very stressful night, especially for many winegrowers. Frost nights are a dangerous phenomenon every year in fruit and wine growing, because low temperatures around freezing point can cause major damage to fruit and vines,” the Baden Fire Department said on Facebook.
Wine growers therefore decided to light several fires in their vineyards in the greater Baden area. This is how frost is combated.
