The biological clock – and not the birth certificate – shows our true age. While medicine is making great leaps forward in research into life expectancy, we are putting this to the test with a simple saliva test and the latest DNA technology. The result is surprising.
The sun-drenched practice room in the Wilhelminian-style house on Vienna’s Prinz-Eugen-Straße, directly opposite Belvedere Palace, seems infinitely high. The white crepe paper-covered treatment table on which I have to spread out feels even narrower. It smells like disinfectant, like in a hospital. I am a little bit afraid.
Not because this test could tell how many years I have left. Because I have a needle phobia from the start, I die a thousand deaths every time I have blood drawn.
Of course the fear is unfounded. When Professor Johannes Huber (77) personally picks up the needle with a steady hand, the veins can be very hidden. Giving the saliva sample to his charming colleague is a piece of cake.
How old am I really? How old do others estimate you to be? And most importantly, how long will I live? Questions to questions that we have been asking ourselves since time immemorial – and to which there are now increasingly precise answers!
