Four police officers were killed and several others injured in the US state of North Carolina on Monday. During lunch, officers in the city of Charlotte visited a man with a criminal record who had an arrest warrant for illegal possession of a firearm, Police Chief Johnny Jennings said at a news conference.
When they arrived at his house, a man opened fire in the front yard. Police then fired as well, eventually killing the gunman, Jennings said. Another person also shot from the home. Finally, after hours, police managed to secure the building and arrest two people, a woman and a 17-year-old, in the house.
“Lost some heroes today”
Eight police officers were shot during the operation, Jennings said. Three succumbed to their injuries at the scene, one died later in hospital. “Today we have lost a number of heroes who were simply committed to the safety of our community,” the police chief said. “If we put on this uniform, we have no guarantee that we will return home.”
There are many firearms in circulation
Firearms are readily available and widely distributed in the United States. Attacks with many victims regularly shock the country – for example at schools, supermarkets, nightclubs or at major events.
But private fights, police stops, and disputes between criminals and gangs also end in death at a much higher rate than in other countries because so many people in the US carry guns.
