A concert by Austrian-Russian singer Anna Netrebko in Lucerne has been cancelled. The reason is the geographical and temporal proximity of the appearance at the Bürgerstock Peace Conference of Ukraine on June 15 and 16. The concert was scheduled for June 1.
Because the authorities expected a ‘threat to public order’, the Lucerne Culture and Congress Center (KKL) was asked to cancel the singer’s concert. The “Luzerner Zeitung” reported this on Wednesday. There was also pressure from the local government because the public perception of Netrebko was controversial.
Netrebko is repeatedly accused of not sufficiently distancing himself from the war in Ukraine. The artist is also said to have a close relationship with Russian ruler Vladimir Putin. Her management now announces that the singer made several statements in March 2022 “in which she spoke out against the war and called for peace in Ukraine” (see video above). Her position has not changed and she has not returned to Russia.
No problems with performances so far
Netrebko regretted the unilateral cancellation “in violation of the contractual obligations with the organizers.” The peace conference was not scheduled to take place until two weeks after the concert date, and none of their nearly one hundred performances since the start of the Ukrainian war had resulted in a disruption. of public order.
In recent years, the singer has been repeatedly rejected by major international houses. Netrebko has lived in Austria since 2006 and has dual Russian and Austrian citizenship.
