On Wednesday evening, an arson attack was committed on a well-known synagogue in Warsaw. A previously unknown person threw a Molotov cocktail at the building.
Israeli Ambassador to Poland Jacov Livne published a photo on the X Network showing burn marks on the Nozyk Synagogue in the center of the city. Polish President Andrzej Duda condemned what he called the “shameful attack.” “There is no place for anti-Semitism in Poland! There is no place for hatred in Poland!”, he wrote on X. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski also responded to the alleged attack. “Thank God no one was hurt. I wonder who is trying to disrupt our EU accession anniversary,” he wrote.
Suspect (16) arrested
Police announced on Wednesday evening the arrest of a 16-year-old Polish national involved in the incident. Polish Deputy Interior Minister Czeslaw Mroczek said the boy was suspected of trying to set fire to the Jewish church.
The only synagogue that survived the Nazi terror
The 1902 synagogue is special in Warsaw because it was the only Jewish place of worship in the center to survive the destruction by the National Socialists in World War II.
