A 15-year-old teenager was sentenced by the Neubrandenburg Regional Court to a juvenile sentence of seven years and nine months for the violent death of six-year-old Joel from Pragsdorf in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
The court found Geri K. guilty of murder on Thursday. According to the verdict, the Neubrandenburg Regional Court found it proven that the teenager had stabbed little Joel with a 15 centimeter long knife. The teen, who was 14 at the time of the crime, was initially charged with manslaughter.
The lawyer for Joel’s parents and representative of the co-plaintiff, as well as the Public Prosecution Service, argued for murder. The Public Prosecution Service demanded a juvenile sentence of eight years, the suspect’s lawyer argued for manslaughter and demanded seven years.
The case caused a stir in Germany
The now-convicted man was arrested about two weeks after the crime and was believed to be the last person to see Joel alive. According to investigators, the teen became entangled in contradictions and his DNA trace was found on the murder knife. He and the victim’s family knew each other from the village.
An extensive confession from Geri K. caused a surprise last week. The suspect stated that, contrary to previous statements, he acted alone. The verdict is not yet legally binding.
