Police discovered a secret hiding place in a smuggler’s vehicle. Syrian citizens were transported from Bulgaria to Austria in separate boxes under the floor panel of the van.
In Vösendorf in the Mödling district (Lower Austria), a witness reported the incident to the police. He saw several people getting out of a white van. The man suspected that it was people who were being carried away.
A short time later, police officers were able to stop the alleged smuggler’s vehicle – a white van with a Bulgarian license plate – including the driver from Bulgaria and five Syrians between the ages of 16 and 50.
Secret hiding place discovered under car
The vehicle in question had a special secret hiding place: the people being dragged were taken to Austria before border controls in their own boxes under the floor panel, which can be opened and closed with hydraulic tools. After the check, they were placed back in the luggage compartment of the vehicle.
Traffickers arrested
The driver confessed when he was interrogated by investigators, the Lower Austrian State Police Directorate wrote in a press release. He dragged the five Syrian citizens from Bulgaria to Austria for a smuggler’s fee of 6,000 euros per person. The man was taken to prison on behalf of the Wiener Neustadt Public Prosecutor’s Office.
