Ukraine soon to join? – EU accession decides the future of Europe

Date:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly expects his country to gain EU candidate status within a few weeks. “I mean, this will be a decision not just for Ukraine, but for the whole European project,” the head of state said in his daily video message on Monday evening. That will also decide whether the EU has a future or not, Zelenskyj said.

The EU commission wants to announce in June how the ambitions of the country attacked by Russia will continue. The EU heads of state or government, for their part, plan to make a decision on Ukraine’s candidate country status by the end of June. Ukraine considers their fight against Russia as sufficient qualification. The Austrian federal government believes that there should be no accelerated procedures and no shortcuts in the EU accession process for Ukraine. Moreover, intermediate steps and alternatives to accession should be discussed and rapid accession negotiations should be opened with the countries of the Western Balkans, North Macedonia and Albania, emphasized Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) recently at the GLOBSEC security conference in Bratislava.

Ukraine is still fighting
“On the 103rd day, Ukraine’s Donbass will hold out,” said Zelenskyy, 44, referring to the situation in eastern Ukraine. In addition, everything is being done to ensure that the front in the areas of Zaporizhzhya and Mykolaiv holds up. Fierce fighting continued around Sieverodonetsk, Lysychansk, Sloviansk, Bakhmut, Sviatohirsk, Avdiivka and Kurakhove in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

According to Zelenskyy, nearly 18,000 Ukrainian soldiers have received awards since the start of the Russian attack. This is a response of the Ukrainian people to the Russian invasion.

Thanks to Prime Minister Johnson
Selenskyj also thanks Great Britain in his evening video speech. “I am grateful to Prime Minister Boris Johnson for his full understanding of our demands and his willingness to provide Ukraine with the weapons it so desperately needs to protect the lives of our people,” with a range of up to 80 kilometers to Ukraine.

The United Nations has counted more than 4,100 civilian deaths since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in late February, but the civilian death toll is believed to be much higher.
