The British model of flying illegal refugees to Rwanda made the African state the focus of critics. They do not consider the country a safe third country. In fact, Rwanda is the African model state par excellence from an economic and ecological perspective.
The plan had not even been decided when criticism emerged: the ‘Rwanda Plan’, i.e. the deportation of refugees who had illegally entered Britain to process asylum procedures in Rwanda, would damage the reputation of the British – wrote the “Financial Times” for example: “The dubious project is inhumane and extremely expensive. Especially because you have to assume that this country is not a safe third country.”
The images of the civil war in Rwanda from 1990 to 1994 and the genocide against the Tutsis in 1994, in which radical Hutus murdered some 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus, are in bad memory.
A lot has happened since then. So it’s worth taking another look. The landlocked country in East Africa is now considered the “Pearl of Central Africa”. And not just from the perspective of nature and safari lovers.
