The Ukrainian secret service says it has foiled an assassination attempt planned by Russia on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and has arrested two suspects. These are apparently officers in their own ranks.
A “network of agents” under the control of Russia’s FSB secret service that “prepared the assassination of the Ukrainian president” had been dismantled, Ukraine’s domestic secret service SBU said on Tuesday.
Two Ukrainian colonels responsible for protecting high-ranking state officials were arrested. They are accused of passing on classified information to Russia.
Chief of the secret service also in the crosshairs
According to the SBU, the attack plans also targeted the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, Kyrylo Budanov, and other “high-ranking representatives” from politics and the military.
According to Ukrainian intelligence, the group’s plans were to recruit soldiers close to President Zelensky’s security service to “take him hostage and kill him.” One of the members of the network has obtained drones and explosives. Russia has had Zelenskyj in its sights since the offensive in Ukraine began. According to Kiev, several assassination attempts have already been made against the president and other Ukrainian government officials.
Plans repeatedly thwarted
In April, a man was arrested in Poland on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Zelensky. In August, Ukrainian intelligence reported the arrest of a woman accused of helping Russia plan an assassination attempt on Zelensky.
