Warning from Brussels – The EU calls for an immediate halt to attacks on Rafah

Date:

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on Israel on Wednesday to immediately end the military operation in Rafah, otherwise relations between the European Union and Israel would be seriously strained. Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip continued and there were bombardments in the east of Rafah.

Despite international criticism, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far maintained a ground offensive in Rafah, southern Gaza, where more than a million people had sought refuge from the fighting.

Israel describes the city as the last bastion of the militant Palestinian organization Hamas. The military operation also aims to free suspected hostages there.

Last week, the Israeli army entered Rafah with tanks and ordered residents to evacuate. Since then, almost 450,000 people have fled the city, according to the UN Palestine Relief Agency; thousands left again on Wednesday.

Hundreds of thousands fleeing the Gaza Strip
100,000 Palestinians also fled the fighting in the northern Gaza Strip. According to the UN, a quarter of the 2.4 million people in the Gaza Strip have now fled, but there are no safe places left, according to the information.

Israel’s bloody reckoning after Hamas’ major attack
The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by a major attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7. According to Israeli information, about 1,170 people were killed and about 250 people were taken hostage to the Gaza Strip. In response, Israel has since taken massive military action in the Gaza Strip. According to Hamas, more than 35,100 people have now been killed.
