At least ten people have been killed in a train accident in Iran. At least twelve other people were injured. The train derailed on the route between the pilgrimage city of Mashhad and the desert city of Yazd.
A railway spokesperson reported this to the state broadcaster Irib on Wednesday. In particular, five of the seven wagons jumped off the track. Photos from the Isna news agency show that the affected wagons are surrounded by dust. It is not yet clear why the wagons derailed.
More victims feared
At least ten people were killed in the accident and at least twelve others were injured. Rescue workers and helicopters were deployed to treat the seriously injured. In total there were several hundred passengers on the train. The emergency services fear to find more victims.
Reminder of 2016
The train accident is reminiscent of a major disaster in 2016 that killed and injured dozens of people in northeastern Iran. At the time, rescue work was also complicated by the fact that the accident site was in a remote area. Iran’s worst rail accident occurred in 2004 when a freight train carrying chemicals exploded near Nishabur, killing more than 300 people.
