Oldest German-language gravestone discovered

Date:

According to current information, the oldest German-language gravestone is located in the Styrian parish church of Frauenburg, at the foot of the castle ruins of the same name. This is evident from research by a team of restorers.

The restorers had removed the stone – it is attributed to the minstrel Ulrich von Liechtenstein, who died in 1275 – from the wall and examined it, the Kathpress reported on Thursday. The stone was walled next to the main altar in 1871 to prevent loss or theft.

Ulrich von Liechtenstein is said to have selected the 500-kilogram stone himself, which had previously served as a Roman inscription tablet – remnants of the ancient inscription can still be seen. Before it was bricked in, it would have been used upside down as a floor sill for some time.

The Frauenburg castle ruins (photo above) are located in the Murtal above the Styrian market town of Unzmarkt-Frauenburg. It was built in the 13th century by Ulrich von Liechtenstein and was considered his favorite residence.
