The passengers of a Boeing 747 experienced a moment of shock as the plane took off from Makassar Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in the Indonesian province of South Sulawesi. Flames suddenly erupted from one of the jet’s engines (see video above).
The footage shows the Garuda Indonesia airline jumbo jet taking off from the runway when flames suddenly erupted briefly from an engine on the right wing. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon.
The plane turned around and landed safely
As Garuda Indonesia announced, the plane, which was supposed to have flown to Saudi Arabia, immediately turned around and landed safely back at the airport at 5:15 p.m. local time. All 450 passengers and 18 crew members were unharmed in the incident.
“The decision was made by the captain immediately after takeoff when he noted engine problems that required further investigation after a fire was observed in one of the engines,” Garuda Indonesia President Irfan Setiaputra said in a statement. The passengers were on their way to Saudi Arabia for the Islamic Hajj pilgrimage.
The airline has only one Boeing 747 in its fleet. However, due to the rising operating costs of the double-decker aircraft, it is unclear how long the aircraft will remain in service, Garuda Indonesia said.
Numerous malfunctions involving Boeing aircraft
The incident follows numerous other accidents involving Boeing aircraft. The company has been in ongoing crisis since the crashes of two 737 Max planes that killed a total of 346 more than five years ago.
