After a report about a woman being discharged before cancer surgery, dozens of people came forward who had gone through a similar experience. Now the Chamber of Commerce has taken the first steps – and apologized.
The moving circumstances of a Styrian woman (48), who was dismissed by her boss via mobile phone in her hospital bed shortly before her cancer operation, have also deeply moved many ‘Krone’ readers. “The response to the report was overwhelming. We have received numerous messages from people who had similar experiences to Maria,” says Doris Kiefhaber of Austrian Cancer Aid.
WKO apologizes for termination tips
The concerned director of “Krebshilfe” had – as reported – publicly revealed that the Austrian Chamber of Commerce (WKO) openly provides advice on its website about the “problem-free” dismissal of employees on sick leave.
All the more gratifying was the response from the WKO on the day of our publication by email: “The legal information provided should under no circumstances be interpreted as general instructions or even as a request to terminate your contract if you are on sick leave. Therefore, it was insensitive and a mistake to include this legal information on the homepage. We have now taken this offline. Our apologies to anyone who felt affected.”
