Russian President Vladimir Putin apparently wants to move the maritime border with several European countries on his own initiative! Territorial waters in the Baltic Sea are affected – near the national borders with the EU states of Lithuania and Finland.
According to a document from the Russian War Ministry, Russia wants to declare an area in the Gulf of Finland and water areas near the cities of Baltiysk (German: Pillau) and Zelensogradsk as internal waters. The two cities are located in the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
The reasons for the plans were initially unclear. It also remained unclear whether there had already been discussions with other neighboring countries on the Baltic Sea.
Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen immediately called on Russia to comply with United Nations treaties and international maritime law. Finland is a member of the NATO military alliance. Other neighboring countries on the Baltic Sea are Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Sweden, Germany and Denmark. They all belong to NATO.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Micael Biden, warns about Putin’s power ambitions in the Baltic Sea. “Putin’s goal is to gain control of the Baltic Sea,” Biden told RND newspapers. “If Russia takes control and closes off the Baltic Sea, it would have a huge impact on our lives – in Sweden and all other Baltic Sea states. We cannot allow that.”
