The Messepark shopping center in Dornbirn (Vorarlberg) had to be evacuated on Friday afternoon. Several people complained of health problems and four had to be taken to hospital.
On Friday around 12:30 p.m., employees of a clothing store at the fair park noticed health complaints such as headache, sore throat and nausea. The management of the clothing store immediately evacuated and closed the branch.
When emergency services arrived on site, the irritation symptoms were still noticeable. The evacuation of the entire building complex then began. This went smoothly and orderly, the police reported. About 3,000 people were brought out. The rescue team set up a supply center with emergency doctors on site. The emergency services have set up a meeting point for customers and employees at the nearby Panoramahaus.
A total of 25 people with irritation symptoms were treated, four of whom had to go to hospital. The cause of the complaints is still unclear. It was thought that gas or vapors may have escaped, but investigations into this by technical and chemical experts revealed no evidence of a gas leak or the like. The exhibition park was therefore reopened around 3 p.m.
The fire brigade, rescue teams with emergency doctors, police, state chemists and technical experts were present. Employees of the exhibition park also helped with the evacuation.
