World famous as the ‘Doge’ meme: the dog Kabosu is dead

Date:

The internet mourns: dog “Kabosu” died in Japan at the age of 18. The image of the Shiba Inu Kabosu went viral as a meme in 2010 and also became the face of the cryptocurrency Dogecoin in 2013.

The meme dog’s owner delivered the sad news on Friday. “On the morning of May 24, Kabosu crossed the Rainbow Bridge,” Japanese woman Atsuko Sato wrote on Instagram (see post below). Her dog fell asleep peacefully without suffering, “while she felt the warmth of my caressing hands.”

She thanked the Internet fanbase “for loving Kabosu all these years. “I’m sure Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world,” Atsuko said. This makes her the happiest dog owner in the world.

Like “Doge” for the immortal meme
In 2010, the kindergarten teacher from the city of Sakura near Tokyo took photos of her pet, which she had just taken from the animal shelter, and published them on her blog. One of them, in which ‘Kabosu’ looks questioningly and curiously into the camera, quickly became a meme. The photo of the dog, therefore known as “Doge” – a corrupted form of “Dog”, was often shared on social networks and internet forums, often combined with text in equally corrupted English, and formed the basis for many jokes. There are also numerous image adjustments.

The digital currency ‘Dogecoin’, founded in 2013, took its name and logo from the meme. Elon Musk caused a stir when he replaced the well-known Twitter bird with the Dogecoin logo last year – without explanation. The value of the coin then rose sharply for a short time.

On X, as Twitter is now known, the “Dogecoin” team expressed their sadness over the dog’s death. “The impact this dog has had around the world is immeasurable,” one post said. “We were all fortunate that her story touched and shaped ours.”

When dog reaches old age
“Kabosu” was lovingly cared for by her owner until her death. At the age of 18, the Shiba Inu dog became particularly old – for humans this corresponds to approximately 90 years old. The life expectancy of this breed is 12-15 years.
