Snakes are appearing en masse in Austria and causing a stir: One of the reptiles scared children at a birthday party Wednesday afternoon in Oberwart, Burgenland.
The telephone rang at the Oberwart city fire brigade on Wednesday evening. There were excited reports of a snake being sighted at a children’s birthday party. Three firefighters arrived on the scene. The comrades of the city fire department finally managed to catch the reptile.

Before the uninvited surprise guest was released back into the wild, the children were allowed to watch the reptile from a safe distance. The snake was then released onto the bank of a creek, emergency services said.
It is unclear what species it was, but it may have been a harmless viper species.
