The Houthis in Yemen have launched a missile attack on the American aircraft carrier Eisenhower. This was in response to attacks by the US and Britain, military spokesman Yahya Saree said. British and American troops attacked targets in Yemen from the air on Friday evening.
At least sixteen civilians are said to have died. The Houthis reported that 34 other people were injured. The information could not initially be independently verified. However, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed the attacks on Friday. “These attacks were carried out to further reduce the Houthis’ military capabilities and deter future attacks on international shipping.”
Sunak: “Self-defence”
It was a case of ‘self-defense’. The Shiite Houthi rebels, backed by Iran, control large parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast (see video above). Since November, they have repeatedly attacked ships – not only in the Red Sea, but also in the Gulf of Aden. Cargo ships heading to Israeli ports are being targeted. According to their own statement, the Houthis want to support the Palestinians in the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Sailors have already died in the attacks.
13 positions under fire
According to US reports, thirteen Houthi rebel positions were shelled on Friday evening. Since the start of the year, British and American forces have repeatedly attacked militia positions in Yemen in an attempt to curb attacks on ships. So far no major successes have been achieved. Only on Wednesday did the Houthis report another attack on a Greek cargo ship. In the ‘Axis of the Resistance’ they work together with Hamas and Hezbollah.
