Breathe a sigh of relief in the Tyrolean town of Ausserfern: after the emergency services on Lech searched in vain for hours on Thursday for a capsized stand-up paddler – the ‘Krone’ reported – he reported to the police a day later.
The man stated at the Elbigenalp police station on Friday afternoon that he had not noticed the large-scale search around him. Otherwise he would have reported to the officials earlier. Through the call for witnesses through the media, he eventually found out that he was wanted the day before.
The local population raised the alarm
A local (66) saw the man standing on his paddleboard on the Lech in Stanzach around 7:40 PM on Thursday. The boater then lost his balance in a rapid, fell off his board and, according to the eyewitness, was adrift. Because the 66-year-old could no longer find the rower, he made an emergency call.
Several fire brigades, mountain and water rescue teams and the Red Cross, supported by drones and a helicopter, searched the Lech for about two hours for the missing person, but then had to cancel the operation without results.
The missing man swam to shore unharmed
On Friday it emerged that the man swam unharmed to shore shortly after falling into the water and took the bus back to his car.
