Serious accident – 48 year old is hit by a tree while at work

In Thörl, in the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district (Styria), a 48-year-old was hit by a tree during forestry work on steep terrain on Saturday morning. He suffered serious internal injuries and had to be flown to hospital by rescue helicopter.

On Saturday morning, a 48-year-old man from the Bruck-Mürzzuschlag district and his 19-year-old son were carrying out forestry work in the area of ​​the so-called Haugsattel. Around 11:30 am they started felling a tree on particularly impassable, steep terrain. To achieve this, the tree had to be secured using the winch of the forest road tractor.

Forestry worker suffered serious internal injuries
But the plan didn’t work and the tree fell straight on the 48-year-old. He was hit by the tree and thrown to the ground. Fortunately, his son was on the spot: he quickly carried out first aid measures and alerted the emergency services and forest workers working in the adjacent forest. The injured man was flown to the Graz University Hospital by the Christophorus 17 rescue helicopter with serious internal injuries (polytrauma).

Fire brigade and mountain rescue arrived on the scene
In addition to the Red Cross, the Thörl mountain rescue service and the fire brigades of Thörl and Turnau were also deployed. The forestry worker was wearing adequate protective equipment at the time of the accident. No indications of foul play could be found.
