Cyprus, Greece – First heat records of the year in Southeastern Europe

More than 39 degrees were measured in three regions in Greece on Tuesday – the values ​​at the beginning of June had never been so high since measurements began.

Cyprus: “Warning for extreme heat”
The Cypriot weather authority has issued an “extreme heat warning” with temperatures on the third largest island in the Mediterranean expected to reach 44 degrees on Tuesday and the following days. “High temperatures pose a health risk to vulnerable people, such as the elderly and small children,” the authorities remind, calling on the population to drink plenty of water, avoid the midday sun and wear only light, loose, light-colored clothing.

Heat wave also in Turkey
Turkey was also hit by the heat wave, with temperatures above 30 degrees. This means that temperatures are eight to twelve degrees above the seasonal average – and yet they are only seen as a ‘harbinger’ of extreme heat periods in July and August.

Concerns about forest fires are increasing
Continued heat and drought in the region are raising concerns about forest fires, especially in Greece, where huge areas fell victim to flames last summer.

In 2024, 3,543 forest fires have already been registered
This year, 3,543 small and medium-sized forest fires were registered in early May – an increase of 22 percent compared to the previous year. The reason for this is, among other things, the very low rainfall winter, which caused drought in parts of the country. This would make it easy for fires to occur – whether started intentionally or caused by negligence.
