The European elections started on Thursday morning with the opening of the polling stations in the Netherlands. Since 7:30 am, voters in the country have been called on to cast their votes for the new members of the European Parliament.
The first forecasts for the Netherlands will be published after the polling stations close at 9 p.m. EU-wide results are not expected until Sunday evening, when polling stations in Austria and the other EU countries are closed.
Election Day in Austria on June 9
After the Netherlands, people in Ireland and the Czech Republic will be called on to vote on Friday. Elections will take place in the Czech Republic on Saturday, with elections also taking place in Italy, Latvia, Slovakia, Malta and the French overseas territories. In Austria, as in most other EU countries, election day is on Sunday.
Austria will receive twenty mandates, one more than before. About 370 million people across Europe are being called on to cast their votes.
In the polls in the Netherlands, Geert Wilders’ right-wing populist Party for Freedom (PVV) is leading. It is not only there that a shift to the right is expected throughout Europe.
