The search for a pensioner from the Oberwart district has a sad ending: the 77-year-old, who has been missing since Sunday’s EU elections, was found dead in his car in Pinka near Kotezicken on Tuesday. Retrieving the body was difficult.
The last sign of life for the 77-year-old from Mischendorf came when the cheerful retiree left his house around 10 a.m. on Sunday to cast his vote for the European elections at the municipal office.
Missing since Sunday
Then his trail was lost. No one knew where the man went after the vote in his green Ford Ranger with Oberwart license plates.
Police warned
Family members, fellow hunters and fire department members began searching for the missing man early Sunday afternoon. His cousin eventually reported his disappearance to the police.
After the missing person was reported, the executive branch launched a large-scale search with the fire brigades of Mischendorf, Kotezicken, Großpetersdorf and Oberwart. The campaign was supported from the air with drones and a helicopter.
Death by drowning
Around 5.30pm on Tuesday it was a sad certainty: the missing man’s Ford Ranger was discovered in the mud-polluted Pinka River near Kotezicken. The retired retiree, the former deputy fire chief, lay dead in the car. Recovering the vehicle was difficult. Investigators assume the 77-year-old drowned.
After the body was found, a crisis intervention team immediately went to the relatives. There is consternation and deep sadness in the dead man’s hometown.
