Chinese and US defense ministers discuss strategic situation in the South China Sea
Chinese authorities assured Friday that “they will not hesitate to go to war” for Taiwan if necessary to safeguard their national security and the Asian giant’s territorial integrity. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wu Qian insisted that the Chinese military “will crush Taiwanese independence” to safeguard its interests after a meeting in Singapore between Defense Secretary Wei Fenghe and his US counterpart Lloyd Austin.
Qian has said the meeting between Wei and Austin, which he described as “candid, positive and constructive”, is important as the two countries try to reach a consensus to develop their military relations. For example, both exchanged views on the Taiwanese issue and the situation in the South China Sea, in addition to the war in Ukraine, according to the Chinese state newspaper ‘Global Times’.
However, Wei took the opportunity to hand over Beijing’s position over Taiwan, insisting that the island is “sacred” and “inseparable from Chinese territory,” as explained by Wu. “The ‘one China’ principle is fundamental to China’s policy and relations with the United States and it has no future in containing the country with the Taiwanese issue,” he said.
In that sense, he addressed the recent United States arms sale to Taipei, stating that this constitutes a “violation of said principle and of the three Sino-US resolutions”, while stressing that it “damages relations , as well as peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
“If anyone dares to separate China from Taiwan, the military will not hesitate to fight and will resolutely destroy any attempt at independence at all costs,” he said.
On the dispute in the South China Sea, he clarified that the countries in the region are ready to reach a “wise agreement” on the issue, but he has admitted that the “interference of foreign forces is the main factor of uncertainty in the area is”.
For this reason, he has urged Washington to take measures to “promote stability” rather than “provoke problems, stir up disputes and foment confrontation”.
