Decision Made – Abortion Pill Remains Approved in the US

Date:

The US Supreme Court upholds access to the widely used abortion pill Mifepristone (see video above). The Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the plaintiffs could not prove that they had suffered or would suffer damage.

The objections may only be of a “general legal, moral, ideological or political” nature. The Supreme Court justices were already skeptical during a hearing a few months ago. About two years ago, the Supreme Court, which moved far to the right under former President Donald Trump, overturned the nation’s right to abortion. Since then, state parliaments have been able to determine for themselves whether and under what circumstances abortions are permitted.

Authority facilitated access
The pill mifepristone is used in more than 60 percent of abortions in the United States. The drug was approved in the US in 2000 and is considered reliable by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Mifepristone is usually used together with the drug misoprostol for abortion, but misoprostol can also be used alone. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a combination of both preparations is slightly more effective.

In recent years, the FDA has made mifepristone more easily accessible. The drug can now be taken up to the tenth week of pregnancy and can also be shipped by mail within the US.

Known in Austria as Mifegyne
In Austria, the drug Mifegyne has been approved for abortion since 1999. The drug is an alternative to surgical abortion (possible up to the 14th week) and is provided until the ninth week of pregnancy in hospitals, outpatient clinics and by gynecologists in private practice.
