A forty-year-old Viennese led a double life for almost ten years: during the week the academic worked at a university and at the weekend he partied with neo-Nazis. “I wanted to please my type of man,” he says in court about the conflict with his sexuality. Skinheads in particular would appeal to him. He now pays for this with a prison sentence.
Political science and history – ironically a 40 year old got his masters or masters degree in these two subjects. He then worked at a university in administration. What no one knew and probably did not expect: in his spare time, the Viennese posed in front of swastika flags to give the Hitler salute, met right-wing radicals to celebrate and exchanged ideas with them on social media.
Right-wing extremist excess in a metro station
The 40-year-old, who has studied, now sits sheepishly in the grand jury courtroom of Vienna’s Landl, being released from custody. Because the charges under the Prohibition Act go beyond the usual text messages and photos: On May 15, 2022, in the early morning hours, he and a second person caused a commotion at the Hütteldorfer Straße metro station. “They shouted that they were going to kill gays and foreigners,” the prosecutor said. They insulted a young man for wearing a pink FFP-2 mask and asked him if he was homosexual. They shouted “Heil Hitler” several times and repeatedly raised their right arms.
And that is what the bald defendant did at the beginning of this year in the middle of the dance floor of a well-known Viennese club. And in the middle of his ongoing investigation into the subway station incident, the handcuffs clicked. Fortunately, he now tells the jury. “I was imprisoned together with Jews and Muslims. I am currently sharing a cell with a Syrian and he told me that his mother died in the war. I realized they were all just people, just like me.”
What he was finally able to come to terms with: his sexuality. “My client realized very early on that his sexual inclinations were not directed towards women. He never admitted that to himself. He thought his family disowned him. He then compensated for his hidden sexuality by becoming a basement Nazi. “You have to imagine the inner conflict,” said lawyer Manfred Arbacher-Stöger, trying to explain the 40-year-old’s behavior.
“I am attracted to this man”
And the suspect himself also makes an attempt, openly dealing with what he has suppressed for years: “As my lawyer has already said: I am homosexual. I escaped to this world where I was loved and admired. Where I belonged.” – “But why the neo-Nazis?” asks the chairman – “I am attracted to this man. For skinheads – big, strong and bald. I wanted to please my type of man.” Therefore, he accepted the ideology and lived by it. “I wanted to be respected as a man.”
He is now paying a high price for this: in the almost ten years he was in the skinhead scene, seventy different facts came together. In both cases he is found guilty by the jury and ultimately sentenced to four years in prison.
