A brutal attack on a group of women in a restaurant has sparked horror in China. Nine people have been arrested in connection with the incident in Tangshan city, northern China’s Hebei province, police said. The attack sparked debate about sexual harassment and gender-based violence on Chinese online networks.
Video footage of the incident circulating on social media shows a man placing his hand on a woman’s back, along with two friends in the restaurant. If the woman pushes the man away, he hits her. Other men forcibly drag the woman out of the restaurant and beat her as she lies on the floor. Another woman is also knocked to the ground.
Two women were so badly injured in the attack that they had to be hospitalized, authorities said. They are in “stable condition”. Two other women suffered minor injuries.
Attack and “provocation of riots”
Police said the nine arrested were charged with bodily harm and “provoking unrest”. Further investigation into the case is underway.
The incident received millions of comments online. “This could have happened to me all, could have happened to all of us,” read a post that more than 100,000 users agreed. “How can something like this still happen in 2022?” wrote another. “Please, punish them and don’t let any of them escape.”
