When a violent thunderstorm with heavy rain descended on Linz on June 3, a deafening boom was suddenly heard in the city center. Many people – especially on social media – wondered at the time what that could have been. The “Krone” now has the answer…
As has now emerged, lightning actually struck St. Mary’s Cathedral. Despite the lightning rod, the impact on Austria’s largest church was so great that several electronic components were seriously damaged. Sometimes the elevator and alarm system operate, but also the bell and clock.
“I have never experienced this in the past 20 years”
When asked by ‘Krone’ whether this had happened before, cathedral master Clemens Pichler said: “I don’t remember experiencing anything like this in the past twenty years.” Most of all, he was happy that no one who experienced the accident was harmed. Even though this only concerns human life, it makes the cathedral master all the sadder when you look at the animal tragedy.
A quick one, three kestrels
Four birds were killed. A swift and three of the four kestrels, which have their nest in St. Mary’s Cathedral and hatch their eggs there, were killed by a lightning strike.
