Regardless of the elections, Macron wants to remain president of France until 2027

Date:

French President Emmanuel Macron wants to stay in office until the end of his mandate in 2027. He announced this on Sunday. However, the politician admitted that the way of governing would have to ‘change fundamentally’ after the parliamentary elections.

He also noticed this desire among the population. For example, “much stronger and more decisive responses” are needed to the “insecurity and impunity” in the country. The president mentioned a new child policy, protection for young people and “the fight against all forms of discrimination.” He also noted a strong desire “for social justice.”

The future government will hopefully “resist the extremes” (see video above). In France, right-wing populists around Marine Le Pen are currently on the rise. After the clear victory of her party Rassemblement National (RN) in the European elections on June 9, the president dissolved the National Assembly and called early elections.

Party only in third place
According to a survey by the newspaper “Le Parisien” and the broadcaster Radio France, the RN is currently in first place with 35.5 percent. The left-green electoral alliance New Popular Front came in second place, while Macron’s liberal camp only came in third with 19.5 percent. Yet the president wants to remain in office until May 2027.

In theory, he is free to appoint a prime minister. In practice, however, it depends on whether the person gets a majority in the National Assembly. Observers currently fear that the three major blocs could permanently block each other.
