The 50-year-old operator was working on a bending machine when he became trapped between the part and the machine.
An operator was seriously injured in an accident that occurred last Friday at the company Haizea Wind, in its facilities at the Port of Bilbao, in Santurtzi, as reported by ELA in a statement.
The accident occurred around 10:30 a.m. and according to data collected by the union, the worker was working on a bending machine when he became trapped between the piece and the machine.
The union has denounced on “several occasions” the “poor” safety conditions in which the staff have to work and has particularly denounced the work procedures used in this extremely dangerous machine, since it bends pieces weighing between 20 and 30 tonnes, and the procedures used “are not appropriate from an occupational health point of view.” The operator is 50 years old, works for a subcontractor and has only worked on the machine for a very short time. The union, which is working to collect more data, has specified that in 2024, 28 workers in Euskadi and Navarra have died as a result of accidents at work. Specifically, in the area of Bizkaia, there are six, and the number of people trapped by machines or parts is four. ELA has denounced that the insecurity has had a “very negative” effect on the workplaces, causing “working conditions to get worse every year.” In this sense, he accused employers of “seriously endangering the lives and health of workers in order to increase the benefits of production”.
