The mountains of Salzburg had already claimed three lives on Saturday, and on Sunday there was another death: a 54-year-old Styrian fell into the Lungau 200 during the descent from Kasereck and died.
A 54-year-old resident of Mauterndorf fell fatally over 200 meters during the descent from Kasereck in the Schladminger Tauern around 1 p.m. “He was already in the lower part of the ridge,” says Hannes Kocher, district manager of the Lungau and mountain rescuer of the Tamsweg. His companion alerted the emergency services.
The Libelle police helicopter team tried to rescue the fatally injured, but strong enemies prevented the approach. Therefore, eight mountain rescuers climbed up. However, due to improvement in the weather, the helicopter team was able to carry out a rescue operation. The rescue helicopter team Martin 1 and a total of 20 mountain rescuers from Tamsweg and Mauterndorf were also present. The operation ended at 18:00.
