Hurricane “Beryl” – Venezuela Vice President Hit by Tree

Date:

A dangerous incident occurred Tuesday during a hurricane damage assessment by Venezuela’s vice president in the state of Sucre, when a tree fell and hit the politician.

“She was in a papaya grove when a strong gust of wind felled several trees and one fell on her,” the South American country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, said in a televised address to supporters. Delcy Rodríguez was “hit hard.” But she was conscious, strong and had already written to him, Maduro gave the signal.

‘Beryl’ travelled through the Caribbean at 270 km/h
Rodríguez traveled to the state of Sucre to inspect the cleanup of damage caused by Tropical Storm Beryl, which tore through the Caribbean with winds of up to 270 kilometers per hour. Three people were reportedly killed in Venezuela. The Manzanares River burst its banks and more than 600 homes were damaged. The government has sent 3,600 police officers and disaster relief workers to the northern region of the country and transported 2,000 tons of relief supplies to the disaster area.

The tropical storm caused severe damage to several islands as it passed through the Caribbean. The center of the storm made landfall Monday over the island of Carriacou, part of Grenada, causing severe devastation. The full extent of the damage remains to be seen. Grenada has reported three deaths so far, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines has reported one.

Jamaica prepares for storm surge
Jamaica is now bracing for heavy rain and wind, as well as an expected storm surge. Kingston and Montego Bay airports are expected to remain closed overnight. Prime Minister Andrew Holness urged residents to stock up on drinking water and canned food and to seek safety if necessary. The storm is expected to approach the Cayman Islands from Thursday evening and later Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula.

An unusually early start to the hurricane season
‘Beryl’ is the first hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season that began in early June. Never before has such a strong storm been recorded so early in the season, which lasts six months. In the meantime, the NHC measured wind speeds of around 270 kilometers per hour. From 251, the highest category 5 is reached. As a result of climate change, warm sea water in particular makes strong hurricanes more likely.
