Paying by debit card is also becoming increasingly popular in bars: a Latvian tourist apparently developed too much affection for his card – and came into contact with the innkeeper and the police.
The reason for the trouble: The 21-year-old man from Latvia was apparently very drunk; he paid for 16 glasses of beer individually with his debit card in a Bavarian restaurant. This upset the innkeeper in Mamming, in the Dingolfing-Landau district, as Bavarian Radio reports – he called the police for help.
Individual payments were more expensive for the host
Finally, he described his anger to the officers on the scene because he had to pay a transaction fee for card payments – 20 cents per booking. Splitting up the many orders is considerably more expensive for him than if the guest had only paid once.
Guest “uncooperative and stubborn”
When asked about this, the hard-drinking guest was not particularly insightful. The “Passauer Neue Presse” quoted officials as saying that he was “uncooperative and unruly.” After all, in Latvia, card payments, even for small amounts, are not only common but also explicitly encouraged, he defended himself.
Entry ban, but no crime
There were also communication problems between the man and the police, so he was simply escorted out of the restaurant and denied access to the house. However, it is stressed that he has committed no crime.
In Germany, shops and restaurants are generally free to decide whether and what type of card payments they accept. There is also no regulation for what amount they allow this. There is no obligation to allow card payments.
However, in the daily lives of Latvians, there is already a high degree of digitalization: in addition to the usual card payments, official channels are also easily accessible digitally and identity cards are also accessible in this way.
