A highway in the Netherlands has long been the target of climate activists. Several protesters were arrested during a protest last weekend, including the well-known Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg.
Police officers took the 21-year-old to The Hague, Swedish media reported. The protests were organized by the organization Extinction Rebellion (XR). The A12 motorway was temporarily closed and the police also used water cannons against the demonstration, the reports continued.
The A12, which runs through the centre of The Hague, has long been the focus of protests. The activists want the Netherlands to abolish all government subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
Swede recently arrested at Eurovision demo
Thunberg was arrested in April during protests in The Hague. Police officers also took the activist away during pro-Palestinian protests against Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Malmö in late May. About two weeks ago, Thunberg was arrested during an XR protest in the Finnish capital Helsinki.
