A tragedy occurred at an Iranian airport on Sunday during maintenance work on a Boeing 737-500. A mechanic was sucked in by a running engine and was fatally injured.
Airport staff were performing routine maintenance on the Iranian Varesh Airlines plane after landing in Chahbahar. The right engine was tested with the covers open.
The technician just wanted to get tools
Normally, no people are allowed to be around during such tests. But a technician had forgotten a tool and wanted to get it home quickly. This resulted in a fatal incident. The worker was sucked into the engine and could not get out.
It also caught fire. Although firefighters and rescue workers were on the scene quickly, they were still able to retrieve the remains of their colleague. Iranian authorities have launched an investigation. The passenger plane will remain grounded until further notice.
A similar incident in Amsterdam
A similar incident occurred in May at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. There too, an airport employee was caught in the deadly airflow. The investigation at the time showed that the victim had voluntarily climbed into the engine to commit suicide.
