French justice has opened an investigation against singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. The wife of the former president is accused of influencing witnesses and participating in a criminal organization.
The target is said to be gang-related fraud. It involves suspected campaign funds from Libya. A witness accused Nicolas Sarkozy of financing his 2007 election campaign with money from Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi. The case against the singer’s husband has been ongoing since October 2023. A French-Lebanese intermediary told the court he had handed over suitcases full of cash from Gaddafi’s coffers to Sarkozy in 2006 and 2007.
But no suitcases full of money?
Later, however, he surprisingly retracted his statements. Sarkozy and his PR advisor allegedly tried to bribe witnesses. His wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy was also heard as a witness. Finally, the investigators noticed that she had deleted all the messages she had exchanged with the PR advisor of the former French president – precisely at the moment that the judiciary started the procedure against Sarkozy.
As a result, she herself became a target. The investigation began on Tuesday. With the exception of her husband, Bruni-Sarkozy is no longer allowed to have any contact with the suspects in the election campaign affair.
Sarkozy was originally due to spend a year behind bars without parole, but successfully appealed the sentence and was ultimately spared prison.
