Animal was shot – crocodile killed after fatal attack on child

Date:

Rangers have killed the animal responsible after a fatal crocodile attack on a child in Australia. The 4.2-metre-long reptile was tracked down and shot over the weekend, but was only now found floating on the surface of the water, Northern Territory police said. Authorities confirmed it was the crocodile that attacked the 12-year-old girl in a waterway a week ago.

The child had been swimming near the Aboriginal community of Nganmarriyanga and suddenly disappeared in Mango Creek. The area is about 360 kilometres southwest of Darwin. There were immediate fears that the victim had been killed by a crocodile. After a large-scale search, emergency services discovered the girl’s remains on Thursday, two days after the accident.

The head of government hopes for comfort for the family
She hopes the discovery of the crocodile will bring some relief to the family, Australian ABC quoted Northern Territory Premier Eva Lawler as saying. “I am pleased that the large crocodile has been found and hopefully this can bring some relief to the family after this absolutely heartbreaking incident.”

Saltwater crocodiles are more aggressive than freshwater crocodiles
According to government figures, the Northern Territory is home to more than 100,000 saltwater crocodiles – more than any other state in Australia. The animals, which grow up to six metres long and are also known as ‘salties’, are considered extremely aggressive. Freshwater crocodiles also live in the area, but these are less dangerous. On average, there are two fatal crocodile attacks per year across the country.
